Aditya Birla Group made the decision to sell its underperforming food retail chain in September 2018 in order to concentrate on the clothing retail market. Six years after Pantaloons, a garment brand, was purchased by Birla from Future Group for Rs 1,600 crore, the chain was sold. Since then, the Aditya Birla Group has acquired other companies to grow its expansive garment retail industry. In contrast, in 2017, it closed its loss-making online shopping division, Abof.com (All About Fashion).
In order to focus on apparel retailing with revenues of close to $1 billion, the apparel retailing flagship, Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail (ABFRL), has signed a number of strategic partnerships in the luxury and super-premium segment with top-tier haute couturiers like Shantanu & Nikhil, Tarun Tahiliani, Sabyasachi, and Masaba.
