In a significant development for the state’s textile industry, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, S. Savitha, announced that the government is set to unveil a new textile policy soon. The policy aims to revitalize the sector and create new opportunities for weavers and textile workers.

During a recent Legislative Assembly session, Ms Savitha addressed a query raised by TDP legislator B. Jayanageswara Reddy regarding the long-awaited textile park in Yemmiganur. The minister clarified that the decision to establish the park was taken by the previous TDP government in 2015, with an allocation of 90 acres of land.

However, the subsequent YSRCP government’s policies had a detrimental impact on the textile sector, including the diversion of 14 acres of the textile parkland for housing schemes. This move sparked protests from beneficiaries who had to seek legal intervention to protect their land rights.

Ms Savitha assured us that the Yemmiganur Textile Park project is back on track and will be implemented to provide employment to approximately 5,000 people. Additionally, the government plans to set up textile parks in Rayadurgam, Mylavaram, Pamidi, and a combined textile and handloom park in Chirala.

To further support the weaving community, the state government is actively seeking Central government funds. The minister revealed that a substantial allocation of ₹30 crore has been secured for the establishment of a mega textile park in Dharmavaram. This initiative, along with the new textile policy, aims to restore the former glory of Andhra Pradesh’s textile industry.
