NEUMÜHLE Launches Circular Mono Hoodie Made Entirely from Cotton

The Zurich-based label’s Limited Drop uses 100% organic cotton for the fabric and cotton sewing thread, eliminating elastane from the garment construction.

Zurich-based label NEUMÜHLE has introduced the Circular Mono Hoodie, an everyday garment developed around a single-material construction. The hoodie uses 100% organic cotton fabric and cotton sewing thread, while take-back arrangements and existing recycling partnerships form part of the product’s circular design approach.

One Material Throughout the Garment

The Circular Mono Hoodie is made using a monomaterial concept that extends from the fabric to the sewing thread. Its fabric consists of 100% organic cotton, while the sewing thread is cotton and Cradle to Cradle Certified®.

The design contains no elastane, avoiding the introduction of another fibre type into the textile construction. NEUMÜHLE states that this approach considers potential future recycling during the material-selection stage.

The hoodie features a soft, heavyweight fabric, clean lines and a subtle NEUMÜHLE logo, with the garment designed for everyday wear.

Why Monomaterial Construction Matters

Research published in 2026 by Wageningen University & Research found that 61% of discarded textiles in the Dutch clothing system studied consist of material blends. The study concluded that monomaterial designs or components that can be easily separated are better suited to efficient, high-quality textile-to-textile recycling.[1]

Empa has also highlighted the challenges associated with recycling material blends and the importance of knowing the composition and quality of textile materials.[2]

These findings provide context for NEUMÜHLE’s approach of considering potential recycling requirements when selecting materials for garments.

Take-Back and Recycling Partnerships

NEUMÜHLE works with various recycling partners and collects returned materials itself before consolidating the returns.

The label aims to return the collected materials to use through these partnerships. Customers who return a Mono Hoodie receive a 20% voucher toward their next purchase.

“We are rethinking clothing. It should be worn for years, bring joy and eventually return to a material stream. That is why we consider the end of a garment’s life right from the design stage - and work backwards from there,” says Andreas Fehr, co-founder of NEUMÜHLE.

Mono Series Expands

The Circular Mono Hoodie follows NEUMÜHLE’s earlier Mono Vest and Mono Shirt, which were developed around the same single-material approach.

The Mono Vest received the German Federal Ecodesign Award in 2023. With the new hoodie, NEUMÜHLE is applying the monomaterial principle to another everyday garment.
