Milano Unica Unveils MU Metamorphosis Trends for Spring/Summer 2028

Trend Concept Highlights Lightweight Fabrics, Artisanal Craftsmanship and Technical Innovation in High-End Textiles and Accessories
Milano Unica presented MU Metamorphosis, its Spring/Summer 2028 Tendenze concept for high-end fabrics and accessories, on October 21, 2026, at Garage 21 in Milan. Developed in collaboration with the Milano Unica Style Committee, the concept explores how nature, material innovation and craftsmanship can influence the next season's fashion collections.
The presentation brought together industry representatives to discuss emerging creative directions, textile research and the evolving relationship between tradition and innovation in fashion.
Metamorphosis: Exploring Change in Fashion
The central theme of this edition, Metamorphosis, examines transformation in aesthetics as well as in the ways people live, consume and perceive product value. The concept points towards lighter materials, artisanal craftsmanship and technical solutions designed to respond to changing needs.
The presentation opened with remarks by Simone Canclini, President of Milano Unica, who highlighted the role of fabrics and accessories in fashion product development and the importance of communicating the expertise of the entire supply chain.
Canclini also emphasised the need for a long-term vision in a complex market environment, including investment in the environment, people and future generations. He highlighted the importance of preserving Italy's manufacturing heritage and the expertise associated with the Made in Italy label.
Sara Sozzani Maino, Creative Director of Fondazione Sozzani, discussed the role of change in contemporary fashion, focusing on younger generations, collective industry responsibility and the search for innovative materials.
She highlighted that innovation requires an understanding of existing knowledge and resources, alongside dialogue between tradition and future creative approaches and between craftsmanship and new ideas.
Three Themes Define the Spring/Summer 2028 Trends
Stefano Fadda, Artistic Director of Milano Unica, presented the MU Metamorphosis concept, developed with the Milano Unica Style Committee.
Drawing inspiration from nature and its ability to transform and regenerate, the research is built around three principles: lightness, celebration of craftsmanship and adaptability. These principles are expressed through three themes covering fabrics, accessories, surfaces and colours.
1. LIGHTWEAR – The Metamorphosis of Lightness
This theme explores impalpable fabrics, ultra-fine wools, fluid silks and transparent surfaces. Materials are designed to flow with movement, making lightness both a physical and sensory quality in summer fashion.
2. HANDWEAR – The Metamorphosis of Craftsmanship
The focus is on artisanal techniques and surface development, including three-dimensional embroidery, woven structures, patchwork, regenerated denim and embossed finishes.
These techniques add depth to fabrics, while detailed finishes become distinctive elements of product design.
3. TECHWEAR – The Metamorphosis of Protection
This theme combines technical wool yarns, microfibres, stretch fabrics and breathable membranes to develop functional materials for everyday use.
The focus is on lightweight and adaptable solutions that integrate technology into clothing materials.
Wool Reinterpreted for Summer Collections
Special attention has been given to wool and its potential for summer applications. The research explores ultralight constructions, airy surfaces and new processing techniques, extending the material's use beyond traditional seasonal boundaries.
Overall, MU Metamorphosis brings together sustainability, material research, innovation and manufacturing expertise as key elements shaping Spring/Summer 2028 fashion collections.
The three themes, along with their colour palettes, materials and accessories, can be explored through the official MU Metamorphosis website.
Exhibition Design Brings the Concept to Life
The MU Metamorphosis concept was also reflected in the exhibition design at Garage 21. Physical fabrics, accessories and prototypes developed by participating companies were displayed on tables dedicated to the three themes.
The arrangement allowed visitors to examine different surfaces, finishes and material interpretations.
Illustrations by François Berthoud complemented the exhibition, creating a visual connection between textile research and artistic expression.
Mittelmoda Highlights Emerging Fashion Talent
The Tendenze presentation was followed by the fashion show and awards ceremony of the 32nd edition of International Lab of Mittelmoda – The Fashion Award.
The international competition is dedicated to young designers and fashion students, providing a platform connecting education, experimentation and the fashion industry.
Its inclusion in the programme reinforced the discussion around investing in younger generations and encouraging dialogue between emerging creative ideas and established industry expertise.
