Milano Unica Reveals ‘MU IS PUNK! HANDCRAFT IS PUNK!’ for FW 2027/28

Milano Unica has introduced the theme “MU IS PUNK! HANDCRAFT IS PUNK!” for the Fall-Winter 2027/28 collections. The concept focuses on craftsmanship, manual processes, and the integration of artisan techniques with technology. It outlines three thematic directions for the upcoming season.
Within this framework, the term “Punk” is used to represent a departure from mainstream uniformity and to emphasise the importance of individual identity in design. The concept explores how traditional artisan techniques, particularly those associated with Italian heritage, can be combined with modern technological approaches to create differentiated textile products.
“The choice of the term Punk! to describe the theme for the Fall-Winter 2027/28 collections may seem a little strong, but it was precisely intended to provoke a positive reaction to the creative torpor that has led to the cloning of luxury codes and the trivialisation of everything. We need an awakening of sorts: a call to responsible design that draws on our extraordinary production capabilities, which are recognised and somewhat envied around the world. We need to reconnect with the manual skills that make us unique and set us apart”, explained Stefano Fadda, Milano Unica's artistic director.
The theme is structured into three directions: MU IS PUNK / CLASSIC!, MU IS PUNK / FREESTYLE!, and MU IS PUNK / ROMANCE!.
MU IS PUNK / CLASSIC!
This direction focuses on refined materials and controlled imperfections applied subtly within traditional design frameworks. Materials include cashmere and cashmere blends, compact double wool and double cashmere, pinstripes in fine wool, flannel and super worsted, as well as striped cotton and cotton/silk shirts.
Processing techniques include dirty devoré on velvets and doubled fabrics, contrasting needle-punched stitching with metallic yarns, off-centre jacquards, matte treatments, and intentional irregularities such as unfinished edges and asymmetries. Accessories include horn and mother-of-pearl buttons, oxidised and satin-finished metals, concealed zippers, and dull electroplating finishes. The colour palette ranges from Taupe, Burnt Burgundy, and Chestnut Brown to Chalk White, Charcoal Black, and Oxidised Silver.
MU IS PUNK / FREESTYLE!
This theme centres on movement and adaptable garments designed for both indoor and outdoor contexts. Materials include combed wool, cashmere fleece, upcycled fur, technical silk, and glossy nylon.
Processing includes icy lamé on compact wool, frosted finishes, and quilting with geometric patterns inspired by ski slopes. Accessories feature sculptural hooks, soft-touch electroplating, padded edges, reinforced seams, and reflective accents. Colours include Lustrous Brown, Electric Blue, Vermilion Red, Resin Green, Neon Fuchsia, and Glacier White.
MU IS PUNK / ROMANCE!
This direction examines the relationship between fabric, structure, and layering. Materials include extralight nylon, cotton-wool fleece, couture denim, and fine wool gabardine.
Processing techniques include textured bouclés, washed-out colour effects, reflective inserts, rubberised coatings, and soft 3D prints. Accessories include thin laces, concealed fastenings, opaque or fumé crystals, small weathered buttons, and handmade embroidery. The colour palette features Dark Green, Tobacco Brown, Brick Red, Rosy Greige, Faded Bronze, and Rust.
The Fall-Winter 2027/28 concept reflects Milano Unica’s focus on combining traditional manufacturing knowledge with contemporary production approaches.
