Membrane Bioreactor Market Projected to Reach $6.75 Billion by 2030

The market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 8.5% from 2025 to 2030, supported by stricter wastewater treatment regulations, water scarcity concerns and demand for sustainable water management.

The global membrane bioreactor (MBR) market is projected to increase from USD 4.49 billion in 2025 to USD 6.75 billion by 2030, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.5% during the forecast period, according to a market report covering membrane types, system configurations, capacities, applications and regional trends.

Demand is being driven by environmental regulations across industries and municipalities, which are adopting membrane bioreactor technology to meet higher wastewater treatment standards and produce high-quality treated water. Growing concerns over water scarcity and the need for sustainable water management are also supporting market expansion.

South America Expected to Be the Second Fastest-Growing Region

South America is projected to be the second fastest-growing regional market for membrane bioreactors, supported by government investment in water infrastructure and increased awareness of water quality preservation.

Countries including Brazil, Mexico and Argentina are pursuing development plans that prioritise sanitation and wastewater treatment. Funding is being allocated to upgrade existing facilities and develop new infrastructure.

The combination of regulatory priorities, infrastructure investment and public awareness is expected to contribute to regional market growth.

Recent Developments in Membrane Bioreactor Technology

August 2026: DuPont System Selected for Australian Wastewater Facility

DuPont announced that its MemCor™ membrane bioreactor system had been selected for the upgrade of the Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre in Canberra, Australia.

The system will provide an additional secondary treatment process at the country's largest inland wastewater treatment facility, expanding treatment capacity while maintaining high-quality effluent.

December 2025: Xylem Upgrades Distilling Facility Wastewater Treatment

Xylem reported the upgrade of Sazerac's Northwest Ordinance Distilling facility to an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) system using its ADI® technology.

The conversion increased treatment capacity, eliminated the need for the existing clarifier and improved effluent quality while reducing wastewater hauling and surcharge costs.

July 2025: Veolia Selected for Brazilian Water Reclamation Project

Veolia was selected to design and deliver the Vitória Water Reclamation Station in Brazil, a large-scale municipal wastewater reuse facility.

The project incorporates Veolia's memDENSE™ membrane bioreactor, ZeeWeed™ 500-EV ultrafiltration membranes and PROflex™ reverse osmosis technology. The facility is designed to reclaim 85% of municipal wastewater for industrial use.

August 2025: DuPont Technology Deployed at New Zealand Wastewater Plant

DuPont, in partnership with Watercare and the Waikato District Council in New Zealand, implemented its MemPulse membrane bioreactor technology for a new 6.0 MLD wastewater treatment plant serving Raglan.

The deployment supports wastewater treatment requirements through high-quality effluent. When combined with OxyMem MABR technology, MemPulse MBR can help lower total nitrogen levels to support stricter environmental discharge standards.

Market Outlook

The membrane bioreactor market is expected to benefit from continued investment in wastewater infrastructure, stricter environmental requirements and the need to improve water reuse. Municipal and industrial applications remain important areas of demand as water management becomes a growing priority.
