A New Sustainable, Fluid-Repellent Solution for Healthcare Textiles

Magnera has introduced a next-generation PFAS-free nonwoven textile solution, delivering strong fluid repellency, comfort, and regulatory alignment for healthcare and other industries.

Magnera, a prominent provider of advanced material technologies, has introduced its newest breakthrough for nonwoven textiles. This next-generation innovation offers the essential fluid-repellent performance required by healthcare professionals and various industries—delivered without the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

For decades, PFAS chemistry has played a central role in protective medical textiles such as gowns, drapes, and barrier fabrics due to its high durability and strong resistance to liquids, oils, and stains. However, increasing evidence of PFAS persistence and its potential health implications has triggered regulatory reforms and significant global demand for safer alternatives.

Paul Harmon, Chief Innovation and Marketing Officer at Magnera, noted: “Our new solution meets the industry’s stringent standards for protection, comfort, and compliance in articles such as surgical gowns or drapes, while reducing potential pollutants.”

Responding to a Global Industry Shift

Regulators around the world are advancing measures to limit or eliminate PFAS in manufacturing:

  • European Union: The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has released an updated restriction proposal under the REACH framework. The plan includes phased prohibitions and potential short-term exemptions for essential applications, with final assessments expected in 2026 before implementation by the European Commission. (European Chemicals Agency, 2025)
  • United States: Many states—including California, Maine, and Minnesota—have enacted bans on added PFAS in a wide range of consumer goods, with some deadlines taking effect as early as 2025. These bans cover products such as textiles, cookware, juvenile goods, and food packaging. (Safer States, 2024)

With global manufacturers moving away from PFAS-based technologies, issues such as material shortages and rising prices are intensifying the urgency for reliable substitutes. Magnera’s innovation presents a timely, scalable alternative for healthcare systems and other industries transitioning to safer solutions.

A Safer and More Sustainable Path Forward

Magnera’s breakthrough offers:

  • High-grade fluid resistance without PFAS
  • Breathability and wearer comfort for protective applications
  • Compliance with emerging regulatory frameworks
  • Enhanced environmental stewardship
