Lithium Metal Market Projected to Reach USD 147.61 Billion by 2034

Growing EV adoption, renewable energy storage demand and solid-state battery development drive lithium metal market expansion
The global lithium metal market is projected to grow from USD 33.11 billion in 2025 to USD 147.61 billion by 2034, registering a CAGR of 18.07% during the forecast period from 2026 to 2034, according to an industry analysis by Polaris Market Research.
The report highlights increasing demand for high-energy-density battery materials across electric vehicles, renewable energy storage systems and advanced battery technologies as key drivers shaping market growth. Lithium metal is gaining attention as an alternative to graphite-based anode systems due to its higher energy density and suitability for next-generation battery technologies such as solid-state and lithium-sulfur batteries.
According to the International Energy Agency, global electric vehicle sales exceeded 17 million units in 2024, marking a 25% year-over-year increase. The report noted that battery manufacturers and automotive companies are focusing on technologies capable of extending driving range and reducing charging times, which is contributing to growing demand for lithium metal.
The increasing adoption of renewable energy is also supporting demand growth. Renewables accounted for around 32% of global electricity generation in 2024, with the International Energy Agency projecting the figure to rise to 43% by 2030. The report stated that lithium metal batteries are being positioned for both utility-scale and distributed energy storage applications due to their energy density and efficiency advantages.
The transition toward solid-state battery technology was identified as another major growth area for the market. In July 2025, Tailan New Energy introduced an AI-integrated smart solid-state battery featuring built-in sensing capabilities. The report stated that the commercialization of solid-state batteries is expected to accelerate demand for high-purity lithium metal.
Among end-use sectors, the batteries segment accounted for approximately 46.75% of the total market share in 2025, supported by expanding deployment of advanced battery systems in electric vehicles and energy storage applications. The aerospace and defense segment is projected to record a CAGR of around 13.95% due to demand for lightweight energy systems in drones, satellites and defense electronics.
From a supply perspective, lithium ores and hard-rock mining represented approximately 39.85% of the market share, supported by established mining infrastructure and higher purity output. The report also noted rising momentum for recycled lithium, particularly in Europe, following updated battery recycling guidelines issued by the European Commission in July 2025.
Asia Pacific accounted for approximately 44.30% of the global market share, supported by China’s dominance in battery cell manufacturing. China currently represents more than 75% of global battery production. The report stated that declining battery prices in China during 2024 further strengthened the region’s competitive position.
North America is also witnessing increasing investment activity. In April 2026, Apogee Power announced a USD 16 million investment to establish a lithium-iron phosphate battery manufacturing facility in Kansas as part of broader efforts to strengthen domestic battery supply chains.
The report highlighted challenges including dendrite formation in lithium metal batteries, supply concentration risks, handling complexities and price volatility. High-purity production requirements and complex refining processes were also identified as constraints affecting large-scale commercialization.
Major companies operating in the market include Albemarle Corporation, Ganfeng Lithium Co., Ltd., Tianqi Lithium Corp., Livent Corporation, Umicore SA, Piedmont Lithium Inc. and 6K Inc..
In March 2026, POSCO Future M partnered with Kumho Petrochemical and BEI to develop anode-free lithium-metal batteries targeting higher energy density and faster charging performance.
