Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has received Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its calcium sulfate binder CAB 30 and its application in conventional calcium sulfate screeds. The declarations, issued by Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU), confirm the product’s environmental performance and provide data for sustainability assessments in construction projects.

LANXESS has announced that its calcium sulfate binder CAB 30 has obtained Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) from Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU). The declarations cover both the binder itself and conventional calcium sulfate screeds produced using the material. The certification confirms the environmental characteristics of the product and documents its carbon footprint for use in ecological evaluations of construction materials.

CAB 30 is described as a low-emission anhydrite binder that has undergone building biology testing. The binder complies with the requirements for volatile organic compounds (VOC) and meets environmental standards that allow it to carry an eco-label. The product is standardized according to DIN EN 13454.

Emission tests have shown that the calcium sulfate binder complies with the requirements set by the Committee for Health Assessment of Building Products (AgBB). In addition to these tests, the binder has also received positive evaluations under the Belgian VOC regulation. In France, the product has been awarded the “Emissions dans l’air intérieur A+” classification, indicating very low indoor air emissions. This rating applies even when the binder is used with additives such as Mebonit pro or Mebofix pro.

According to the company, calcium sulfate screeds based on the CAB 30 binder can be applied across large areas without requiring joints or reinforcement. The additive Mebofix pro functions as a drying accelerator and reduces the amount of water required when mixing screed mortar. Lower water content shortens drying times and can improve compressive, flexural, and surface strength.

Environmental Product Declarations provide standardized data for evaluating construction materials throughout their life cycle, including raw material extraction, processing, and disposal. They are widely used as a reference for sustainability assessments in construction projects and are often applied in certification systems related to sustainable building practices.

EPDs also support transparency and comparability between construction materials and may be required for participation in certain public tenders or subsidy programmes.
