Kolhapuri Chappals Shine at NIFT Daman Orientation 2025

The iconic Kolhapuri chappals took center stage at the NIFT Daman campus during its 2025 orientation program, blending rich Indian tradition with modern fashion education. The spotlight on this centuries-old footwear highlighted its intricate craftsmanship, heritage value, and evolving relevance in contemporary design.

Originating from Maharashtra and Karnataka and dating back to the 12th century, Kolhapuri chappals are celebrated for their durability, aesthetic detail, and deep-rooted cultural legacy. The orientation event aimed not only to welcome new students but also to honor India’s artisanal excellence through experiential engagement.

Graced by the Director of Higher and Technical Education of Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu as chief guest, and presided over by NIFT Director Dr. Brijesh Deore, the orientation featured an inspiring fashion walk, where students and artisans showcased the chappals in diverse styles and formats, demonstrating their versatility on the ramp.

Adding a strong industry interface, the event also hosted a “Meet the Industrialist” session, offering students direct interaction with textile business leaders. A hands-on workshop allowed students to try their hand at crafting Kolhapuris, while a live demo stall drew crowds with its customized, traditional manufacturing process on display.
