India-Panama Trade Sees Scope for Growth Through Panama’s Strategic Gateway Role

Panama offers Indian businesses opportunities for regional distribution, logistics, manufacturing and market expansion across the Americas
Panama can provide Indian companies with a strategic platform to expand across Latin America, the Caribbean and the wider Americas, supported by its geographical location, the Panama Canal, maritime infrastructure, logistics ecosystem and special economic zones. This was highlighted during a high-level interaction at MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai, where Indian and Panamanian representatives discussed opportunities for greater trade and investment cooperation.
The discussions focused on sectors including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automobiles, engineering, manufacturing, consumer products and technology, along with opportunities in warehousing, distribution, assembly, testing and regional commercial operations.
Panama Positioned as a Regional Business Platform
H.E. Mr. Alonso Correa Miguel, Ambassador of the Republic of Panama, said Panama can serve as a gateway for Indian companies looking to establish a presence across the Americas.
“Panama can serve as a strategic gateway for Indian companies seeking to expand their presence across Latin America, the Caribbean and the wider Americas. Its strategic geographical location, the Panama Canal, strong maritime and logistics ecosystem, special economic zones and the Colón Free Trade Zone provide significant opportunities for Indian companies to establish regional distribution, warehousing, manufacturing and commercial operations,” said H.E. Mr. Alonso Correa Miguel, Ambassador of the Republic of Panama, during a high-level interaction at MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai and President, All India Association of Industries.
He further highlighted Panama's potential as a regional business platform rather than only an export market.
“Indian companies can explore Panama not only as an export destination but also as a regional business platform from which they can serve multiple Latin American markets. Opportunities exist for establishing regional headquarters and distribution centres, particularly for companies in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automobiles, motorcycles, engineering, consumer products and technology. Panama can help businesses address some of the challenges associated with entering individual Latin American markets, including logistics, local regulations, distribution networks and market-specific business practices,” said H.E. Mr. Miguel.
Opportunities Across Manufacturing and Distribution
Mr. Roberto Rodríguez Prada, Consul General of Panama in Mumbai, highlighted opportunities for stronger direct engagement between businesses in the two countries.
“There is considerable scope to strengthen direct engagement between Indian and Panamanian businesses, particularly in pharmaceuticals, chemicals and manufacturing, with opportunities ranging from warehousing and distribution to assembly, testing, finishing and manufacturing within Panama’s special economic regimes. Indian companies with established customers across the Americas can potentially use Panama to improve regional market access, supply-chain efficiency and customer servicing.”
The opportunities discussed extend across multiple stages of business operations, including regional warehousing, distribution, assembly, testing, finishing and manufacturing.
Bilateral Trade Has Potential to Exceed US$1.2 Billion
Dr. Vijay Kalantri, Chairman, MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai and President, All India Association of Industries, highlighted the complementary strengths of India and Panama across several sectors.
“India and Panama have strong complementary capabilities across pharmaceuticals, chemicals, manufacturing, engineering, automobiles, maritime services, logistics and technology. With bilateral merchandise trade currently at around US$600 million, there is significant potential to double this to over US$1.2 billion in the next two years through stronger B2B engagement, greater market awareness and focused cooperation in high-potential sectors. Panama’s strategic location and connectivity to the Americas can provide Indian companies with an effective platform for regional expansion.”
The proposed expansion in bilateral trade would be supported by stronger business-to-business engagement, market awareness and sector-focused cooperation.
Panama’s Logistics Network Supports Regional Expansion
Panama's strategic location and connectivity were identified as important factors for Indian businesses seeking to access multiple markets across the Americas.
The country's maritime and logistics ecosystem, together with the Panama Canal, special economic zones and Colón Free Trade Zone, can support regional distribution and commercial operations.
For Indian companies already serving customers across the Americas, Panama could provide opportunities to streamline regional supply chains and establish distribution or manufacturing operations closer to target markets.
Focus on Long-Term India-Panama Economic Engagement
The interaction concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen India-Panama economic relations through greater business-to-business linkages, sector-focused cooperation and continued institutional engagement.
Both sides emphasised the importance of converting identified opportunities into concrete trade, investment and commercial partnerships, while leveraging Panama's position as a gateway to the Americas and India's capabilities in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, technology and entrepreneurship.
