According to a UK parliamentary report on the negotiations for the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, India’s desire for data localization is a “stumbling block” to unrestricted cross-border data flows between the two countries.

In its most recent report on “UK trade negotiations: Agreement with India,” the House of Commons International Trade Committee also issued a warning that greater India market access to the UK for textiles, apparel, footwear, and horticultural products could have “unfavourable effects on some developing countries in South Asia, South-East Asia, and East Africa that benefit from preferential access to the UK market.”
