Driving Europe’s transition to sustainable, circular fashion systems

The European UPWEARS Project completes its first year with major progress in circularity tools, recycling technologies, and data-driven solutions that support the EU’s sustainable textile vision.

The European UPWEARS Project has completed one year of progress toward establishing a more sustainable future for European fashion by advancing circular and climate-neutral systems. Supported by a multidisciplinary consortium representing the textile value chain, the project is driving innovations that enable fiber-to-fiber recycling, improve product traceability, and integrate data-driven decision-making across the fashion ecosystem.

Aiming to shift the industry away from linear production models, UPWEARS focuses on technologies and tools that support durability, repair, reuse, and high-quality recycling. The initiative brings together academic researchers, industry leaders, manufacturers, and technology providers to transform textile design, production, and end-of-life processes.

After its first year, the project reported significant achievements, including the development of digital tools to assess circularity performance, advancements in automated sorting and identification of textile materials, and testing of strategies that extend the lifespan of garments. Several pilot projects are underway to evaluate recycling readiness, create repair-friendly designs, and validate new circular business models.

The consortium continues to work toward a connected infrastructure where data can track clothing throughout its lifecycle—from design and manufacturing to reuse and recycling. These efforts aim to support policy goals linked to the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles.

UPWEARS is committed to sharing research, collaborating with global partners, and developing solutions that strengthen Europe’s leadership in sustainable textiles. Learn more at www.upwears.eu and follow the project on LinkedIn for updates.
