The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has received a generous donation from the GS Charity Foundation to support a major research initiative by its School of Fashion and Textiles (SFT). The project, titled “From Tradition to Tech: A Holistic Approach to Sustainable Fashion Design and Brand Ecosystem Management in the Age of AI and Digital Platforms”, will explore how artificial intelligence can drive sustainable fashion design and brand ecosystem development.

The donation and kick-off ceremony took place at PolyU, officiated by Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, PolyU President, and Mr Yeung Fan, Vice-chairman and General Manager of Glorious Sun Group. Souvenirs were exchanged, including a woven PolyU memento engraved with the words: “With chic, intelligently led fashion, PolyU extends its heartfelt gratitude.”

Prof. Teng expressed appreciation for the Foundation’s long-standing support, noting: “AI is a core technology driving Hong Kong’s reindustrialisation and smart city development. With PolyU’s strong research capabilities, this collaboration will nurture talent equipped with AI expertise, helping Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area strengthen their position as hubs for fashion innovation.”

Mr Yeung Fan added: “Since the 1980s, Glorious Sun Group has enjoyed a strong partnership with PolyU. Our support for this research demonstrates our confidence in PolyU’s research excellence and reflects our shared commitment to talent development, innovation, and sustainability in the apparel industry.”

The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including leaders from PolyU, Glorious Sun Group, and government representatives. Following the event, Prof. Joanne Yip, Associate Dean of SFT, introduced the project’s scope, highlighting how AI and digital platforms are reshaping the fashion industry.

The project will focus on seven key areas, including intelligent data-driven design, AI applications in apparel review, material simulation, cost estimation, supply chain collaboration, analysis of online consumer reviews, and AI-based live commerce optimisation. By integrating traditional design practices with AI, blockchain, IoT, and other emerging technologies, the project aims to boost efficiency, safeguard creative assets, and elevate the competitiveness of sustainable fashion.
