The worldwide textile industry has made the creation of a circular economy—where the materials used to make something, like a garment, are continually recycled to create new things with as little waste produced as possible—a fundamental objective in recent years.

There have been many initiatives, particularly in Europe, and in March 2022, the European Commission unveiled the EU strategy for sustainable and circular textiles1, which carries out the European Green Deal’s commitments to achieve climate neutrality for the EU by 2050 and its circular economy action plan (CEAP)3, one of its main policy initiatives.

5.8 million tonnes of textiles are thrown each year, and the CEAP seeks to “make sustainable products the norm in the EU.”
