The breakthrough indigo yarn dyeing method developed by the Israeli business Sonovia, in collaboration with Italian denim developer PureDenim, has been licenced to French luxury group Kering for integration into their denim manufacturing processes. The well-known corporation Kering, which owns several eminent fashion houses, has been working to cut its overall greenhouse gas emissions by 40%.

Traditional indigo yarn dying methods rely on harmful chemicals like hydrosulfite and are water intensive, using an average of 60,000 litres of water each operation. The water used in the textile dyeing process can be reduced by up to 85% with Sonovia’s D(y)ENIM indigo yarn dyeing ultrasound technology, which is also hydrosulfite-free.

A revolutionary deal was reached with Kering to evaluate Sonovia’s technology for their denim manufacturing. change that distances the fashion industry from its energy use, chemical waste, and water use.

Given that denim is one of the most often worn articles of apparel worldwide, Sonovia’s D(y)ENIM indigo yarn dyeing technology is expected to significantly lower pollution generated during the manufacturing of denim, improving the sustainability of one of the most polluting sectors. Since the beginning of 2022, Sonovia and PureDenim have collaborated on the growth and scaling of the D(y)ENIM technology.According to Gigi Caccia, CEO and owner of PureDenim, “Sonovia’s process is the pinnacle of indigo dying with almost no environmental impact. Sonovia and Kering, two futuristic partners, give us the confidence to take on problems that, up until yesterday, seemed impossible.

Chief Business Officer (CBO) at Sonovia Roy Hirsch states: Sonovia’s indigo dyeing process has been confirmed as the future of the textile industry by this deal with Kering, one of the most prestigious luxury companies in the world.
