Using Holz-Bauer’s secure sewing technology and a static binder machine, Holz-Bauer fills and closes the 2-ply Mondi kraft paper used to make the PelletBags for Mondi products. PelletBag will replace Holz-Bauer’s present plastic bag solution, which is currently the norm for wooden pellets. The switch by Holz-Bauer to paper packaging is a sign of the movement towards employing more environmentally friendly packaging options.

A circular economy is one of the complementing sustainability goals shared by Mondi and Holz-Bauer. Wooden pellets made by Holz-Bauer are made from waste from local sawmills. This method of utilising sawmill waste adheres to the cascading use of wood idea that Mondi endorses and maximises the value of fibre. This impliesthat wood is first used to create high-performance goods with hygiene or strength criteria, such kraft paper, and then it is successively recycled until the end of its useful life, when the leftovers are burned for green energy.

Kraft paper from Mondi is made from sustainable, ethically produced fibres, and the finished paper bag may be recycled in regular European recycling systems. The bags are conveniently transportable and storeable and have a good tear resistance. The 15kg PelletBags from Holz-Bauer are handcrafted to express their own brand and corporate identity.

“Our entire company ethos is about providing natural products and keeping all materials that we use in the system for as long as we can,” explains Martin Bauer, Owner of Holz Bauer. Together with Mondi, we are collaborating with acompany that has the same goals – the team helped us create packaging that will be right for our products and our eco-conscious consumers.”
Fabio Barbieri, Sales Director Paper Bags, Mondi says: “We work along the approach of using paper where possible, plastic when useful – PelletBags provide the required strength and protection to pack wooden pellets. Using packaging from the same renewable resource as the contents themselves increases the brand value of the product, providing a sustainable and convenient solution for the end user.”
Mondi’s PelletBag is available in white and brown, and in a range of sizes up to 25kg, which were recently showcased at Expo Biomasa in Valladolid, Spain, from 09 to 11 May.
