Shagufta Khanam, a skilled artisan from Nagina, Uttar Pradesh, recently attended the craft bazaar organized by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Daman. Khanam’s stall featured an exquisite collection of handmade brass and wood jewellery, crafted by a team of 30-40 workers.
Khanam’s initiative not only showcases traditional craftsmanship but also empowers women by teaching them jewellery-making skills and providing them with a livelihood. Despite facing stiff competition from cheap Chinese products, Khanam’s handmade jewellery stands out due to its unique designs and craftsmanship.
The craft bazaar provided a platform for Khanam to showcase her products and connect with potential customers. According to Khanam, the demand for handmade jewellery is increasing, with customers appreciating the distinction between handmade and machine-made products.
NIFT Daman’s craft bazaar is a commendable initiative that supports artisans and promotes traditional craftsmanship. By providing a platform for artisans like Khanam, NIFT Daman is helping to preserve traditional skills and empower women through sustainable livelihood opportunities.
