WeDesign, in conjunction with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the UN, has opened the design competition Future Fashion Now. It is a multinational, creative design competition that encourages participants to reconsider the workings of the fashion industry. The Foundation is working to encourage a generation to reinvent, re-design and create a sustainable circular economy for the way forward in the future.
Driven by the Make Apparel Circular and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the competition includes students, designers, fashion weeks, and the global fashion industry to create a sustainable outfit or accessories to encourage the future of fashion, according to a Foundation media release.
The fashion industry is fundamentally linear, it uses energy to produce clothes that inevitably end up as waste. The industry produces twice as many clothing as it did in the early 2000s and at the same time we are wearing less and less of our clothing. Nearly 75% of all garments are disposed in landfills or burnt, with just 1% recycled into fresh clothing.
Clothes, shoes , and accessories are used more in a circular economy, are made from sustainable and renewable materials, and are designed for recycling and re-using. Competition entrants can incorporate circularity and the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN while retaining a product that looks and feels good. The item must represent the times in which we live, the fashion industry that we need and the future we’d like to live in.
The competition will be judged by a panel of fashion and sustainability experts, including the Foundation’s Make Fashion Circular lead, Francois Souchet. The competition is open to all, with different categories and prizes and closes on the September 30, 2020.
