CORK-ODILE SKIN: THE NEW VEGAN LEATHER

French vegan company Arsayo introduced its latest Exotic Cork Skin range of back packs made from the bark of oak trees this week. The collection was developed by Arsayo’s co-founder Ary and Jonathan Ohayon brothers, who also founded the F.A.K.E. Project, a global platform dedicated to the promotion of socially responsible vegan apparel, with the goal of providing a sustainable and humane alternative to animal skins from crocodiles and snakes.

The new line features two styles (“Cork-odile” and “Snake Skin Cork”) featuring lightweight backpacks ($249) made of cotton interiors and available in different sizes. The set is for pre-order only, a scheme that converts into a lower purchase price. “In the conventional fashion industry, designers start by producing their creations and sell them to retailers who mark them up significantly,” Ary Ohayon said. “In the end, you will pay the strong final price. With the pre-order system, we will only produce according to the demand, and since we cut out the middlemen, you will pay less.”

Creating Exotic Cork Skin is also environmentally friendly as extracting cork from trees does not damage them and in turn allows them to consume more carbon dioxide which helps to regenerate the bark. “This new exclusive alternative is a tribute to the beauty of amazing exotic animals with the respect for their life and our environment,” Jonathan Ohayon said. “We want to set an example for the fashion industry, and show that animals shouldn’t be harmed for fashion.”
