Tougher Rules For Protective Textile Items on the Anvil

India has notified one of its intention to come up with a quality control under the 12 items which is made for ghe protective textile which includes the protective clothing such as gloves, bullet resistance jackets, high- visibility warning clothes and a water-proof multi-purpose rain ponchos.

The QCO also makes the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) a mandatory sale for the identified items in the domestic market. The main aim is to ensure the health and safety of consumers which play an important role to curb the cheap imports. According to the notification sent to WTO, “The final date for comments (from WTO members) is 60 days from the date of notification” .

The protective textile has a protective attribute which is extending the protection from the extreme heat and cold, hazardous chemicals, germs and ballistic which also includes projectiles of various shapes, sizes and the impact velocities. The draft for the Quality Control 2022 which is yet to be published in the Gazzette of India. The same does not have a proposed date (for publication and adoption). As of now, the implementation has to be done in 6 months after its adopted.

The QCO for the 12 protective textiles is a part of the Textiles Ministry’s big plan. This will bring 107 technical textiles items under the ambit of quality control. There are 19 geo-tech items, 22 agro-tech items and 6 medi-tech items in the pipeline. Till date, 48 mdi-tech items have come under the umbrella bracket of Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) regulation. The BIS has set 500 standards which have been developed with the technical textiles. The BIS is working with the development of 40 more such sstandard requirements of the industry.

The centre is also trying to push the domestic manufacturers for the technical textiles which will happen with the production of the Linked Incentive Scheme.
