IGI inaugurated its second laboratory in Jaipur with Advanced Colored Gemstone Analysis Technology

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has inaugurated its second laboratory in Jaipur on January 29, 2026, reinforcing its operational presence in North India. The expansion reflects IGI’s strategy to strengthen service accessibility for India’s gems and jewellery trade.
Jaipur has long been recognised as a major centre for coloured gemstone trading, uncut Polki jewellery, and fine craftsmanship. The new facility is located in Sitapura, a dedicated gems and jewellery manufacturing zone, enabling IGI to remain closely connected with industry stakeholders. This proximity is expected to support quicker grading turnaround times, improve workflow efficiency, and enhance overall service delivery for manufacturers and exporters.

Commenting on the development, Tehmasp Printer, Managing Director and Global Chief Executive Officer of IGI, said the rising demand for coloured gemstones is being shaped by changing consumer preferences. According to him, growing interest in personalised jewellery and fusion designs that incorporate multiple precious stones has increased the need for accurate gemstone evaluation.
He added that determining a gemstone’s origin and identifying treatments are complex processes requiring advanced analytical instruments and specialised gemological expertise. The new Jaipur laboratory, he noted, will strengthen IGI’s capacity to deliver precise analysis at scale, supporting industry requirements while contributing to transparency and confidence across the supply chain.
The Jaipur laboratory will provide IGI’s full portfolio of certification services covering diamonds, coloured gemstones, and jewellery. Advanced testing methods, including Raman spectrometry, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, and X-ray fluorescence, will be used to examine gemstones’ structure, composition, and inclusions in order to assess their geological characteristics.

In addition to certification, the Sitapura facility will also host educational and training programmes through the IGI School of Gemology, aimed at building regional skills by offering contemporary, industry-relevant gemological education.
With this addition, IGI now operates 35 laboratories in 10 countries and manages 21 Schools of Gemology worldwide.
