Ibex has incorporated Nuyarn® performance yarn into its new Nautilus Fisherman Sweater, produced using domestic 3D knitting technology. The product combines a traditional rib-knit design with a twist-free merino yarn structure, highlighting the application of technical fibers in lifestyle knitwear.

Ibex has introduced the Nautilus Fisherman Sweater using Nuyarn® performance yarn, integrating advanced textile engineering with 3D knitting carried out in Brooklyn, NY. While Nuyarn® is commonly used in outdoor baselayers, the new sweater demonstrates its suitability for lifestyle apparel.

The Nautilus Fisherman Sweater features an 8-gauge, 2x2 rib knit structure produced through bespoke 3D knitting. It is manufactured using Nuyarn® technology with a blend of 70% merino wool and 30% nylon. Unlike conventional spinning methods, Nuyarn® drafts fibers onto a high-performance filament without a traditional twist, allowing the wool to retain its natural properties.

According to performance data, the resulting garment provides 35% higher thermal retention with increased loft and air permeability, supporting temperature regulation. Durability is reported to be 8.8 times higher than conventional ring-spun merino, with greater burst strength and abrasion resistance. The structure also enables drying times that are five times faster and elasticity that is 85% higher than standard merino, without the use of spandex.

The 3D knitting process forms garments directly into their final shape on the machine, which reduces material waste by eliminating fabric offcuts and results in minimal production waste.

“This partnership with Ibex is a perfect example of how Nuyarn technology can be applied to redefine classic silhouettes,” said Monica Ebert, Nuyarn VP of Sales. “By integrating our twist-free yarn into a bespoke 3D knitting process, Ibex is demonstrating our technology isn't just for performance layers.”

“We're seeing incredible opportunities in outdoor luxury—athleisure, sweaters, and accessories where performance meets everyday style,” said Andy Wynne, CEO of Nuyarn. “The technology we've developed doesn't have to be confined to technical baselayers. Merino, when spun correctly, belongs everywhere—from trail runners, hikers, cyclists, and skiers to staple everyday pieces that are comfortable, breathable, and durable.”

The Nautilus Fisherman Sweater incorporates 3D knitted construction with underarm venting to support breathability and movement. Each unit is produced to order in men’s and women’s sizes and is available through ibex.com, with a stated production turnaround of 6–9 days.
