The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Daman celebrated National Handloom Day with great enthusiasm. Chief Officer of Daman Municipal Corporation Mr Sanjam Singh, DANICS inaugurated the event. Director Dr. Brijesh Deore, highlighting the remarkable growth of the Indian handloom sector between 2015-2025. He credited Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's strategic interventions, including the National Handloom Development Programme, for empowering lakhs of weavers and elevating the stature of handcrafted Indian textiles globally. Students demonstrated their skills in using the charka for yarn spinning and showcased their handloom weaving skills. A Rangoli display and competition were also part of the event. A graceful classical dance was performed by students through expressive movements. They paid tribute to India’s rich handloom heritage, beautifully portraying the spirit of traditional weaving and craftsmanship. The celebration aimed to promote the rich heritage of Indian handlooms and textiles, while encouraging students to appreciate and preserve traditional crafts.

The celebration lauded the efforts of the government in promoting the handloom initiatives. Financial support given to Khadi and handloom has been a game-changer, with nearly 3 lakh weavers receiving loans under the MUDRA scheme to grow their enterprises and enhance working capital. Welfare and protection have also been paramount, with over 7.75 lakh handloom workers finding security under social insurance programs. The supply of subsidised yarn has benefited 5.3 lakh weavers, and the distribution of electronic jacquards featuring solar-powered lifting has shortened design cycles and reduced costs, making traditional weaving more competitive and future-ready.
