Heimtextil 2027 to Present Functional Materials at New Functional Futures Lab

Special showcase curated by Future Fabrics Expo will feature material innovations spanning thermal regulation, flame protection, circularity and bio-based composites
Heimtextil will introduce the Functional Futures Lab at its upcoming edition from 12 to 15 January 2027, highlighting performance materials and their applications across architecture, interior design and hospitality. Curated by Future Fabrics Expo, the showcase will explore how material functionality, development and design can contribute to new interior solutions.
The exhibition will feature both experimental prototypes and commercially available products, with information explaining their development stages. Its focus will range from temperature regulation and flame protection to acoustic comfort, healthier indoor environments and materials designed to adapt to changing uses and environmental conditions.
Connecting Material Innovation with Practical Applications
The Functional Futures Lab will demonstrate how new materials can respond to evolving requirements for living and working spaces. Exhibits will cover innovations in textile fibres and dyes, durable composite materials for surfaces, and design prototypes developed through research.
The showcase will also examine how performance characteristics can support comfort, durability and long-term use in interior environments.
Future Fabrics Expo brings expertise in material innovation and sustainability, supported by an international network spanning material development, design and research.
“Performance is a key topic for the future of the textile industry. We see this worldwide at our events, from apparel to home and contract textiles. Together with Future Fabrics Expo, we showcase at Heimtextil what innovative materials will be capable of in the future. The Functional Futures Lab connects early-stage developments with solutions that are already available and highlights new potential applications for architecture, interior design and hospitality,” says Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt.
“We are delighted to partner with Heimtextil January 2027 to elevate the conversation around the future of home and interior textiles. This partnership will connect inspiration with actionable solutions and help shape a future focused, forward-looking, responsible industry,” explains Amanda Johnston, Chief Design Officer, Future Fabrics Expo.
Technology Readiness Levels to Guide Material Selection
The exhibits will range from early-stage prototypes to products already available on the market. Information accompanying the displays will explain their functional properties and stages of development using Technology Readiness Levels.
This approach will help trade visitors assess the maturity and potential applications of materials, supporting decisions related to material selection, product development and long-term planning.
Professionals working in architecture, interior design and hospitality will be able to explore possible applications for their projects. The showcase is intended to strengthen Heimtextil’s role in knowledge exchange and the development of future-focused interior solutions.
Three Themes Explore Circularity and Material Performance
The exhibition will be organised into three colour-coded areas: Circular Systems, Living Nature and Natural Performance. These themes will group materials according to their origins, processing methods and underlying concepts.
Key performance characteristics will include temperature responsiveness, durability, flame resistance and antibacterial effects. Circularity and fundamental sustainability criteria will also inform material selection.
Among the exhibits will be upholstery materials made from untreated wool fibres and living root systems, designed to provide flame protection without toxic chemicals. Other examples will include durable bio-based composites and dyes derived from food waste for use on textiles and wood.
Functional Futures Lab at Interior.Architecture.Hospitality
Located in Hall 4.1, the Functional Futures Lab will form the centrepiece of Heimtextil’s Interior.Architecture.Hospitality area.
Alongside the material displays, the space will support knowledge sharing and professional networking. The Talk Spot will host experts sharing insights on stage, while a café will provide space for discussions and new contacts. The area will also serve as a starting point for guided tours.
Heimtextil 2027 will take place from 12 to 15 January 2027.
