Giriraj Singh Inaugurates National Seminar on ‘New Age Fibres’ in New Delhi

Ministry of Textiles seminar highlights sustainable fibres, innovation and policy discussions for India’s textile sector
Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurated a National Seminar on “New Age Fibre: Innovation, Research and the Road Ahead” in New Delhi on May 19, 2026. The event focused on the role of sustainable fibres in supporting eco-friendly growth and rural employment in India’s textile sector.
Organised by the Ministry of Textiles through the National Jute Board, the seminar brought together policymakers, industry representatives, researchers, startups, academicians and other stakeholders to discuss the future of emerging sustainable fibres in India.
Seminar focuses on sustainable fibre development
The discussions during the seminar centered on fibres including pineapple, flax, bamboo, hemp, banana, ramie, nettle, milkweed and kapok, which are gaining attention for their biodegradable and eco-friendly properties.
According to officials, these fibres could support agricultural diversification, rural livelihoods and value-added exports while contributing to sustainable growth within the textile industry.
The event also examined policy frameworks, entrepreneurship opportunities and long-term development strategies related to India’s sustainable textile ecosystem.
Industry, policy and research stakeholders participate
The seminar included participation from policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, startups and academicians who discussed innovation, research and industrial applications linked to new-age fibres.
The programme also featured the inauguration of a “New Age Fibres Expo” showcasing products and technologies based on natural fibres.
In addition, reports prepared by three task forces were released during the event to support future policy development related to the sector.
Discussions highlight future roadmap for textile sector
Sessions during the seminar explored sustainability, entrepreneurship, skill development and innovation in textile manufacturing and fibre applications.
Officials stated that recommendations from the seminar are expected to contribute to future policy frameworks and sectoral planning for India’s textile industry.
