Gen Z Hosts on Airbnb Grow Nearly 40% in India as Young Indians Enter the Hosting Economy
Gen Z hosts are expanding beyond major metros, with Indore recording over 120% year-on-year growth and rural destinations seeing a 60% rise.
India’s Gen Z is increasingly participating in the travel economy not only as travellers but also as hosts. According to new Airbnb data, the number of Gen Z hosts in India grew nearly 40% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, with nearly two in every five new Airbnb hosts in India aged 18–29.
The growth follows Airbnb’s Never the Same report, which highlighted changes in how Gen Z travels in India. The latest data indicates that young Indians are also increasingly opening their homes to travellers across cities, emerging destinations and rural communities.
Young Hosts Expand Across India
The increase in Gen Z hosting is being recorded across the country, with Bangalore, Delhi, Gurugram, Indore, Mumbai and Noida among the cities experiencing the sharpest expansion.
Indore recorded more than 120% year-on-year growth in its Gen Z host community. Young hosts are also emerging in Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kochi, Lucknow and Mathura, extending the presence of young Airbnb hosts beyond the country’s major metropolitan areas.
Shreya, a Gen Z Airbnb host from Dehradun, said:

With my mother’s encouragement, I turned our unused first floor into a space for guests. Hosting on Airbnb has allowed me to turn my love for creating warm, welcoming spaces into work, while giving me the flexibility to spend more time with my family, travel and explore my interest in sustainable tourism.”
Nearly one in seven Gen Z hosts in India has achieved Superhost status, Airbnb’s recognition for consistently high hospitality. The share has remained steady even as the Gen Z host community expanded by nearly 40% in a year.
Gen Z Host Earnings Rise Over 60%
The expansion of the young host community has also been accompanied by an increase in earnings. Gen Z host earnings through Airbnb grew by over 60% year-on-year in the first half of 2026.
Rural Destinations Join India’s New Hosting Map
Gen Z hosting is also expanding beyond urban centres. The number of Gen Z hosts in rural destinations increased 60% year-on-year, while low-density urban destinations recorded almost 70% growth.
The data points to a growing presence of young hosts in destinations outside the country’s traditional tourism centres, offering travellers a broader range of accommodation options and local experiences.
