Fast fashion waste has been dumped in the world’s driest desert, Chile’s Atacama Desert. The desert, which is being increasingly polluted by the fashion industry, is home to a mountain of abandoned apparel, including Christmas jumpers and ski boots.

Within 24 hours of discovering the narrative, we were able to buy and access an Existing Image after consulting our Discord channel for assistance in locating the coordinates of the piles.

Utilising Earth observation data to verify online reports

Our goal at SkyFi is to make it easier to obtain Earth observation (EO) data. One scenario for the data’s use is to verify Internet rumours, and it is for this reason that we have taken a photo of this heap of clothing from space, showing the full scope of the issue. The Very High Resolution image with a resolution of 50 cm was captured using satellite photography and demonstrates the size of the pile in relation to the city at the bottom of the image. This $44 satellite image is an excellent source of ground truth to verify the information we read online because it is high-resolution and clearly tells a tale.

Perspective is provided by the satellite photograph we ordered of the clothing heap in Chile’s Atacama Desert. It is evident how big the pile is and how much pollution it is producing. from space, making it clear that there is a need for change in the fashion industry. Our mission to make Earth observation data easy and transparent is vital to identifying and addressing problems like this one. With our web and mobile apps, anyone can access satellite imagery to confirm stories and see the world from a new perspective.
