Abstract
Fashion has increasingly reflected militaristic themes in the context of international conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine crisis and the Iran-Israel war. This article examines how global runways are reinterpreting the aesthetics of warfare, including structured silhouettes, camouflage, and combat gear. Fashion is evolving into a means of expression and survival in a volatile world as a result of designers' reactions to unrest and the emergence of streetwear subcultures like "warcore."

Introduction
The shadows of conflict are reflected in fashion, which has always been a mirror to the times we live in. The runway turns into an unexpected but powerful platform for political commentary as the world observes the developing Iran-Israel conflict and the protracted destruction in Ukraine. Although fashion has long been militarized, its current renaissance is largely due to the chaos, uncertainty, and fear of the current world.
Camouflage prints, combat boots, tactical belts, structured shoulders, and functional silhouettes are some of the visual cues that designers are taking from the battlefield. This trend is symbolic and goes well beyond aesthetics. Fashion serves as psychological armor, a nonverbal form of resistance, and, in many respects, a statement of survival during times of crisis.
From the Frontline to the Front Row
Balmain's Fall/Winter 2022 collection included leather harnesses and gold-buttoned jackets with strong shoulders that mirrored the shape of a contemporary warrior. In his 2023 collection, Rick Owens, who is renowned for his dystopian vision, transformed the runway into a theatrical battlefield by showcasing apocalyptic coats with hoods inspired by gas masks and combat-ready boots.

"Warcore," a trend characterized by tactical vests, cargo pants, industrial straps, and neutral, functional colour schemes, emerged alongside luxury fashion from the streetwear scene. This survivalist style has been adopted by designers such as Balmain and Rick Owens, who have combined luxury fashion with preparedness gear. Warcore fashion transforms collective anxiety into wearable preparedness in a world characterized by abrupt violence and political unpredictability.

In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, this militaristic influence has a strong symbolic meaning. While sturdy materials like leather, canvas, and nylon evoke the need for resilience, structured clothing projects order in a chaotic world. The iconic olive T-shirt worn by Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has gained international recognition as a symbol of his quiet, strong, and strategic leadership during the war. In Iran, on the other hand, women who defy enforced dress codes are particularly expressing minimalist defiance through their wardrobe choices, transforming fashion into a form of silent protest.
These fashion trends bring up important questions, such as whether designers are criticizing or merely aestheticizing war. Does military fashion appeal because of fear, power fantasy, or nostalgia? And is tactical styling protective or performative when consumers choose it?
The way that clothing and warfare are combined highlights the psychological effects of world turmoil. Fashion is evolving into a tool for identity, messaging, and occasionally even activism; it is no longer just about creativity or beauty. When society feels under siege, it becomes difficult to distinguish between a runway vest and a bulletproof vest.
Ultimately, our clothing choices during times of war, whether symbolic or literal, reveal just as much about our anxieties as they do about our dreams. Fashion continues to dress the moment as well as the body, from couture to camouflage.
