FIEO Sees Piyush Goyal’s Canada Visit as Key Step in Reviving India-Canada Trade Talks

Upcoming visit from May 25–27 linked to CEPA discussions and bilateral trade target of $50 billion by 2030

The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has stated that the upcoming visit of Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to Canada is expected to support the strengthening of bilateral economic and trade relations between India and Canada.

According to FIEO, the visit scheduled from May 25–27 comes at a time when both countries are working towards reviving negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with a target to increase bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030.

FIEO highlights significance of minister’s Canada visit

FIEO said the minister’s visit reflects efforts by both countries to rebuild economic engagement and accelerate discussions on the proposed CEPA.

FIEO president SC Ralhan stated that India and Canada have complementarities across sectors including agriculture, clean energy, critical minerals, food processing, education, and advanced manufacturing, which could support increased bilateral trade and investment.

The federation also noted that the proposed agreement could create opportunities for Indian exporters, particularly MSMEs, by improving market access, simplifying trade procedures, and encouraging collaboration in technology and innovation-driven sectors.

Trade ties linked to supply chain resilience and global market changes

According to FIEO, the renewed engagement between India and Canada comes during a period of changing global trade dynamics and supply chain realignments caused by geopolitical conflicts, tariff-related disruptions, and evolving international trade alignments.

The organisation stated that stronger India-Canada trade relations could contribute to economic resilience, diversification of trade partnerships, and supply chain security for both countries.

FIEO also highlighted ongoing ministerial exchanges and trade missions between India and Canada, including recent engagements involving trade officials from both nations.

CEPA discussions expected to continue

The federation stated that continued dialogue and industry-level cooperation would play a role in expanding bilateral commercial relations.

FIEO expressed confidence that the minister’s visit could provide momentum to CEPA negotiations and support deeper economic integration between India and Canada.
