Fibre Extrusion Technology Highlights Gel Spinning Innovation at Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress

FET presented its fibre processing technologies, including its FET-500 Series gel spinning system for UHMWPE, which received the Techtextil Innovation Award 2026 in the New Production Technology category.

Fibre Extrusion Technology Limited (FET) participated in the Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress in Austria in September, where Dr Jonny Hunter delivered a presentation titled “Spinning a good yarn.” The congress brought together more than 100 expert speakers, industry innovators and global stakeholders. More than 400 attendees from industrial and academic organisations participated in the event.

Industrial participants included Barmag, Sembis and Fraunhofer, while academic organisations included CETI in France, Aachen in Germany and Fibernamics in Portugal, among others. The congress addressed industry challenges, including decarbonisation pressures and changing markets, while providing a platform for collaboration and solutions.

FET Presents Developments in Fibre Processing Technologies

Hunter’s presentation reviewed challenges and technological developments across the fibre industry in recent years. FET designs, develops and manufactures bespoke fibre equipment to help customers across different industries address specific processing and production requirements.

The company’s established expertise is primarily in melt spinning solutions for multifilament, monofilament and nonwoven applications. The presentation also covered more recent developments in specialised fibre processing technologies, including:

  • Meltblown systems: For producing non-continuous nonwoven fibres.
  • Spunbond equipment: For continuous nonwovens.
  • Wet spinning systems: For applications where melt spinning is not possible.

FET-500 Series Gel Spinning System Receives Innovation Award

FET’s latest development is its gel spinning system, branded as the FET-500 Series. The system enables rapid, small-scale gel spinning of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) without using the toxic solvents typically associated with the process.

FET received the Techtextil Innovation Award 2026 in the New Production Technology category for this development.

Focus on Environmental Challenges and Fibre Development

The presentation highlighted FET’s focus on helping customers reduce pollution and waste in research and production processes.

The company’s Fibre Development Centre supports this work by providing facilities where customers can trial their own products. To date, FET has successfully processed more than 130 different polymer types in multifilament, monofilament and nonwoven formats.

FET to Exhibit at COMPAMED 2026

FET’s next exhibition will be COMPAMED 2026, scheduled for November 16–19 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
