eVent Fabrics and ALLIED Feather + Down Redefine Down Jacket Performance

eVent Fabrics, a global developer of waterproof and breathable fabric technologies, has partnered with ALLIED Feather + Down to introduce a concept focused on improving down jacket performance. The system will be presented at Performance Days in Munich on March 18–19 and addresses the challenge of moisture accumulation within insulated outerwear.
The concept integrates ALLIED’s 800 fill power ExpeDRY® down with eVent’s 2-layer stormburstLT laminate. ExpeDRY® down incorporates gold particles engineered to accelerate water vapor evaporation, while the stormburstLT laminate is designed to be breathable, downproof, and weatherproof. The combination is intended to manage moisture both inside and outside the insulation chamber, helping to maintain loft and thermal efficiency in varied conditions and activity levels.
“This is an opportunity to rethink how the entire insulation chamber functions,” said Chad Kelly, Vice President of eVent Fabrics. “stormburstLT delivers over 55,000 g/m² breathability with 8,000 mm waterproofness, while remaining 100% windproof and PFAS-free. By blocking external moisture and allowing interior vapor to escape more efficiently than traditional downproof shells, we’re helping the insulation system stay drier and perform more consistently.”
According to the companies, traditional downproof shells may allow external moisture to enter while also trapping water vapor within the down chamber. As internal moisture accumulates and condenses, the loft of the insulation can decrease, which may reduce thermal performance during periods of high activity.
The stormburstLT laminate is designed for use in down jackets and apparel intended for high-exertion activities in variable weather conditions. Compared with traditional downproof shells, it offers increased weatherproof and windproof performance while remaining breathable, lightweight, and packable. This approach allows garments to function both as insulating layers and protective outerwear.
ExpeDRY® down was developed to address internal humidity within insulation systems. The technology integrates gold particles at the molecular level to accelerate moisture evaporation within the down clusters, with the aim of maintaining loft in damp or high-exertion conditions.
“Down is inherently breathable and the challenge has always been the surrounding fabric environment,” said Matthew Betcher, Creative Director at ALLIED Feather + Down. “ExpeDRY prevents condensation inside the insulation chamber, accelerating vapor movement away from the down clusters. When paired with a more breathable, downproof laminate like stormburstLT, the effect is amplified. The insulation dries faster, the chamber stays drier, and performance improves beyond what conventional constructions allow.”
The system combines insulation and shell materials designed to function together as an integrated construction. The stretch characteristics of stormburstLT are also intended to improve mobility during cold-weather activities.
The concept will be exhibited at Performance Days in Munich, where eVent (booth Q12) and ALLIED (booth I05) will engage with mills, brands, and developers to discuss potential integration of the system in cold-weather apparel.
