EDANA Seeks Clarity and Delay on EU Deforestation Regulation

EDANA urges the European Commission to restore consistency and postpone EUDR implementation.

EDANA has raised concerns over the European Commission’s latest reversal on the EU Deforestation Regulation, warning that the decision adds complexity, disrupts supply chains, and undermines competitiveness. The association calls for clearer guidance and a 12-month delay to ensure the system becomes workable for all operators.

EDANA, the global association representing the nonwovens and related industries, has expressed concern over the European Commission’s recent reversal on the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The organisation views this shift as a missed opportunity to provide a clear, practical, and cohesive framework to support the global fight against deforestation.

Instead of simplifying compliance, the revised announcement adds layers of complexity at a time when businesses urgently need clarity. EDANA warns that this new direction creates confusion among operators, disrupts already sensitive supply chains, and may weaken Europe’s overall competitiveness.

While EDANA members fully support international action to curb deforestation, they stress that the current Regulation—paired with an IT system still not functioning as required—poses significant challenges. Critical issues such as polygon-based geolocation and disproportionate due diligence obligations remain unresolved, leaving companies struggling to comply.

The association urges that the Regulation must not be rushed. EDANA calls on the European Commission to revert to its original proposal to the European Parliament and postpone the implementation by 12 months. This extension, it argues, is essential to ensure the system becomes operational, balanced, and fair for all stakeholders.

According to EDANA, repeated policy shifts damage business confidence and generate instability across global markets. The recent developments have already created confusion internationally, with contrasting positions emerging—some countries pushing for faster implementation, while others request delays.
