EDANA has officially expanded its voluntary Stewardship Programme CODEX™, reinforcing the hygiene industry's commitment to safety, transparency, and consumer confidence. This updated initiative now includes an expanded list of trace chemicals, going beyond existing EU and national legislation to ensure higher standards across absorbent hygiene products (AHPs) such as baby diapers, menstrual products, and incontinence items.

What is CODEX™?
At the heart of EDANA’s initiative is CODEX™, a dynamic framework featuring:

  • An evolving list of trace substances, including PAHs, PCBs, dioxins, furans, phthalates, formaldehyde, and heavy metals. These substances are not deliberately added but may occur in minute traces.
  • Guidance values for each chemical, based on existing regulations, scientific evidence, and industry expertise.
  • Standardized testing methods that assess consumer-relevant trace substance levels in finished products.

Why This Expansion Is Important

  • Wider Chemical Scope: The updated CODEX™ now addresses more substances, helping manufacturers minimize even unintentional trace elements.
  • Greater Consumer Confidence: EDANA members reaffirm their dedication to offering safe, high-quality products by voluntarily adopting stricter controls.
  • Proactive Industry Alignment: The expansion ensures regulatory foresight, enabling the industry to stay ahead of future legislative developments.

This evolution of the CODEX™ is the product of collaborative efforts between scientists, industry experts, and regulators, reflecting a science-based and forward-looking approach to product stewardship. EDANA’s Stewardship Programme continues to serve as a living reference, regularly updated to incorporate new data, substances, and best practices.
