In boardrooms and factory floors alike, the word “sustainability” is now everywhere. But ask five people what it means — and you’ll get five different answers. As global buyers, regulators, and financiers sharpen their scrutiny, sustainability has moved from “good to have” to “non-negotiable.” This article demystifies what sustainability actually means in the context of the fashion and textiles industry, and how Indian manufacturers can use it as a competitive and compliance advantage in global markets.

 

What Is Sustainability in Fashion and Textiles?

In industry terms: “Sustainability means producing textiles and garments in ways that conserve resources, reduce emissions, minimise harm to people and the planet, and protect future generations’ ability to do the same.” It is not about a single certification or trend.  Sustainability is a systemic shift — from extraction and disposal to efficiency, regeneration, and accountability.

The 3 Pillars of Sustainability in Fashion & Textiles

Sustainability affects every step in your supply chain — from raw fibre to finished garment. We break it down into three impact pillars: Materials, Process & Output( Finished product & Waste) 

  1. Raw Materials: What You Make With

Textiles begin with fibre — and the fibre you choose defines up to 80% of your product’s environmental footprint. Sustainable Alternatives:

  • Recycled Cotton: Up to 90% less water than conventional cotton
  • Organic Cotton: Grown without synthetic pesticides; improves soil health
  • Manmade Cellulose (MMCFs): e.g., Lyocell, Modal, Bamboo Viscose
  • Regenerative Fibres: Hemp, banana, flax, jute — low-input crops ideal for India

The making of a garment — from spinning to stitching — is where major environmental damage happens. Water: The Silent Crisis

  • Fashion uses 93 billion m³ of water/year — enough for 5 million people (World Bank)
  • Dyeing and finishing = 20% of global industrial water pollution
  • A pair of jeans = 7,000–10,000 litres of water

SIDBI-GIZ estimates a 15–30% reduction in energy possible in Indian textile mills with available tech.

  •  Traceability: QR-coded journeys from fibre to shelf
  •  Emissions data: Scope 1–3 LCA reports
  •  Social compliance: Fair wages, no child/forced labour
  •  EPR readiness: Mandatory for all EU imports from 2025

What we must now do: Formalise, standardise, and scale up to meet the world’s evolving expectations on sustainability and circularity.

5 Action Steps to Start Your Sustainability Journey

  1. Assess Your Footprint ➔ Use Higg Index, GIZ, or CEE audit templates
  2. Prioritise One Area First ➔ Example: switch to recycled cotton or optimise water use
  3. Get Certified ➔ GOTS, GRS, ZDHC, OEKO-TEX
  4. Engage Your Workforce ➔ Training = ownership = long-term improvement
  5. Communicate Impact ➔ Use QR codes, digital passports, traceable impact storytelling
