Cotton Incorporated Brings Textile Industry Leaders Together to Discuss Sustainability and Innovation

Industry Summit Examines Regenerative Agriculture, Environmental Measurement, Traceability and the Future of Natural Fibres

Cotton Incorporated convened leaders and stakeholders from across the textile and apparel value chain for an industry summit held from September 28–30 in San Diego, California. Announced on October 16, 2026, the event focused on sustainability, scientific research, material innovation and emerging challenges affecting cotton and the wider textile industry.

The summit brought together perspectives from agriculture, textile sourcing, environmental research and sustainability to discuss changing requirements for brands, retailers, manufacturers and cotton producers.

Sustainability Data and Environmental Measurement

Participants discussed the need for credible, science-based methods to assess and communicate environmental impacts across the cotton supply chain. Reliable sustainability data and measurement approaches remain important as textile businesses face increasing expectations around transparency and environmental performance.

Regenerative Agriculture and Climate Resilience

The summit explored research and agricultural innovation aimed at supporting cotton growers and strengthening environmental outcomes. Discussions also examined opportunities to improve climate resilience through developments in agricultural practices and research.

Regulations, Traceability and Circularity

Emerging textile regulations, traceability requirements and circularity initiatives were among the topics discussed. These developments are influencing sourcing strategies and material-selection decisions across the textile and apparel supply chain.

Microplastics and Material Innovation

Participants considered research into plastic pollution and microplastics, alongside the role of fibre selection in addressing environmental challenges. The discussions included the growing importance of natural fibres in industry efforts to examine material alternatives and environmental impacts.

Collaboration Across the Textile Value Chain

The summit also focused on connecting scientific research with practical industry requirements. Participants explored ways to strengthen collaboration among researchers, manufacturers, brands, retailers and agricultural stakeholders to support long-term progress.

William Kimbrell, President and CEO of Cotton Incorporated, said:

“Bringing together diverse perspectives from across the textile value chain is essential to addressing the challenges and opportunities facing our industry. Our focus is on connecting science, research and industry expertise to support informed decisions, advance innovation and strengthen cotton’s role in the future of textiles.”

Focus on Research and Practical Solutions

As the textile and apparel industry responds to growing expectations around environmental performance, transparency and responsible sourcing, Cotton Incorporated said it continues to support science-based research, innovation and collaboration to strengthen cotton’s competitiveness and expand opportunities for the natural fibre.

The summit highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and shared knowledge in addressing industry challenges and developing practical approaches to sustainability and innovation.
