Communist Party of India opposes proposal to remove cotton import duty and restrict exports

CPI State secretary G. Eswaraiah urges Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister to intervene over reported proposals on cotton import duty and exports.

According to a report published in The Hindu from Visakhapatnam on 21 May 2026, G. Eswaraiah urged N. Chandrababu Naidu to withdraw proposals related to the removal of the 11% import duty on cotton and restrictions on cotton exports from India.

In the letter addressed to the Chief Minister on Wednesday, Mr. Eswaraiah referred to reports stating that Piyush Goyal had discussed cotton price stabilization measures with Union Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and others.

According to the report, the proposals included removal of the 11% import duty on cotton and regulation of cotton exports. Mr. Eswaraiah described the measures as “anti-farmer and pro-corporate.”
