Chemicals in textile imports are the focus of an EU project

A new initiative sponsored by the European Commission has been initiated to investigate methods for "fair and effective market surveillance" of chemicals in textile products imported from outside the EU.

The REACH4texiles programme seeks to extend the European Union's (EU) strict rules on textile chemicals to imported products from other regions of the world.

It was created because an estimated 80% of clothes entering the European market originate outside of the EU and its jurisdiction, such as the REACH regulation.
