BTRA, MIDC Sign MoU to Establish 120 TPA Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant at PM MITRA Park, Amravati

National Centre for Carbon Fibre Technology Development to integrate R&D, testing, technology validation and skill development under the PM MITRA Scheme

The Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a 120 TPA Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant at PM MITRA Park, Amravati, Maharashtra. The proposed facility is planned as a National Centre for Carbon Fibre Technology Development to support research, technology validation, testing and skill development in advanced materials.

The Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a 120 TPA Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant at PM MITRA Park, Amravati, Maharashtra.

MoU Exchange Ceremony:
Dr. P. Anbalagan, IAS, Principal Secretary (Industries, Investment & Services), Government of Maharashtra, and Dr. T. V. Sreekumar, Director, BTRA, exchange the signed Memorandum of Understanding for establishing the 120 TPA Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant at PM MITRA Park, Amravati, in the presence of Dr. Sharad Kumar Saraf, Chairman, BTRA.

The proposed facility has been planned as a National Centre for Carbon Fibre Technology Development and will include:

  • 120 TPA Carbon Fibre Technology Demonstration Plant
  • Advanced Research & Development (R&D) Centre
  • World-Class Testing & Characterization Laboratory
  • Technology Validation and Scale-up Facility
  • Skill Development & Training Centre
  • Industry Support and Technology Transfer Platform

According to the announcement, the project is intended to bridge the gap between laboratory-scale research and commercial manufacturing by enabling pilot-scale production, process validation, product development and industrial adoption of indigenous carbon fibre technology.

Carbon fibre is used across sectors including aerospace, defence, automotive, renewable energy, infrastructure, railways, sports equipment, pressure vessels, hydrogen storage, and other high-performance engineering applications. The proposed facility is expected to support efforts to reduce dependence on imported carbon fibre, encourage import substitution, conserve foreign exchange and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. T. V. Sreekumar, Director, BTRA, emphasized that the initiative will accelerate indigenous technology development, facilitate industry–academia collaboration, support startups and MSMEs, and create a highly skilled workforce for the emerging advanced composites ecosystem.

The initiative is aligned with the Government of India's "Atmanirbhar Bharat", Make in India, and the PM MITRA Scheme, with a focus on high-value manufacturing, innovation and industrial development.

The collaboration also supports Maharashtra's role in advanced manufacturing, research and innovation while expanding BTRA's work in textile, technical textile and high-performance materials through research, testing, consultancy and technology development.

Following the MoU exchange, officials and representatives from BTRA and MIDC participated in a group photograph to mark the collaboration for establishing the National Centre for Carbon Fibre Technology Development at PM MITRA Park, Amravati.
