In 2025, bluesign® proudly celebrates its 25th anniversary as a global leader in sustainable chemical and environmental management within the textile and fashion industries. Since its founding in Switzerland in 2000, bluesign has pioneered a science-based input stream management system to eliminate hazardous substances at the start of textile production, ensuring cleaner, safer, and more responsible manufacturing processes.

Now supported by a global network of over 900 system partners, bluesign has become the industry benchmark for verified sustainable practices. It enforces strict standards in chemical usage, environmental performance, and resource efficiency, while also guiding brands through ESG compliance and regulations like CSDDD, CSR, ESPR, and DPP.

A Mission That Endures

From day one, bluesign’s goal has remained steadfast: to eliminate harmful chemicals at the source, protect worker health, reduce environmental damage, and ensure consumer safety. Over the years, this mission has expanded to address challenges such as PFAS elimination, decarbonization, and circular economy strategies, continuously pushing industry improvements.

Measurable Global Impact

  • Safer Chemistry: 28,000+ chemical products and 70,000+ textile materials now carry the bluesign APPROVED label, signifying the removal of harmful substances like CMRs and PFAS.
  • Environmental Performance: Since 2019, system partners have made significant improvements in reducing their environmental footprint.
  • Global Reach: bluesign’s network now includes chemical suppliers, mills, manufacturers, and brands from all over the world.
  • Safety & Transparency: Built on accountability, bluesign ensures safe work environments and non-toxic products through independent, science-based verification.

The bluesign Difference

What sets bluesign apart is its holistic, verifiable system that tracks and assesses sustainability from chemical input to finished product. It goes beyond traditional certifications, enabling long-term compliance and continuous improvement while fostering trust across the value chain.

Looking to the Future

As the industry braces for upcoming challenges in circularity, due diligence, extended producer responsibility, and legislative changes like the EU Green Deal, bluesign remains committed to innovation, worker and consumer protection, and environmental stewardship.

bluesign was born out of a bold idea, that sustainability could be embedded into the DNA of product creation,” said Daniel Rüfenacht, CEO of bluesign technologies. “Twenty-five years later, we’re proud to be a beacon of trust, innovation, and responsibility, and to partner with industry leaders worldwide in building a more sustainable future together.”

To mark the occasion, bluesign will host global events, expert panels, and industry activations to celebrate its partners and further spread awareness on the future of sustainable textiles.
