BCI Introduces B-Kool® Plant-Based Technology to Prevent Bacterial Contamination Without Biocides

New non-biocidal surface technology expands BCI's medical device innovation into textiles, consumer products and industrial materials.
Biocompatibility Innovation (BCI), a company specialising in biostealth technology for medical devices and life support equipment, has launched B-Kool®, a plant-based technology that prevents bacterial contamination without the use of biocides.
The technology is based on BCI's patented biostealth platform, which was originally developed to protect medical devices from adverse biological reactions while supporting long-term device performance. Following more than a decade of research and development in biomedical applications, the company is expanding the platform into textiles, consumer products, industrial materials and advanced manufacturing applications.
Unlike conventional antibacterial treatments that rely on metallic biocides or other chemicals designed to eliminate microorganisms after they attach to a surface, B-Kool® is intended to prevent bacterial adhesion before colonisation begins.
According to BCI, bacteria and other microorganisms must first adhere to a surface to colonise, proliferate and generate contamination. By preventing this adhesion, B-Kool helps maintain hygienic surfaces and control bacteria-derived odour without releasing active substances into the environment.
The company stated that the technology provides manufacturers with a mechanical, non-biocidal alternative to conventional antimicrobial chemistries by preventing contamination before it occurs.
Commenting on the launch, Alessandro Gandaglia, CEO of Biocompatibility Innovation, said:
"B-Kool represents the translation of more than a decade of biomedical innovation into everyday materials and products.
Our patented technology platform was designed to limit the post-implant biological processes that contribute to device degeneration, supporting durable device function over time. B-Kool applies the same scientific principles to help manufacturers create cleaner, fresher, more durable products without relying on conventional antimicrobial approaches."
BCI stated that B-Kool® is 100% plant-based, non-toxic and dermatologically safe. The formulation contains no silver, metals, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), isothiazolinones or other harsh chemicals.
The technology has received OEKO-TEX® ECO PASSPORT certification and has been tested according to ISO 22196, ISO 20743, ISO 846, ISO 6330 and ISO 20645 standards.
BCI said the technology can be applied as a surface treatment or incorporated directly into materials during manufacturing. It is compatible with both natural and synthetic materials, with potential applications across high-performance textiles, consumer products, industrial composites, polymers, coatings and other advanced materials.
Biocompatibility Innovation develops plant-based technologies using pharmaceutical-grade molecules to improve biocompatibility, durability, integration and protection across medical, consumer and industrial applications. The company states that its technologies are designed to extend the lifespan of medical devices while protecting consumer and industrial materials from bacterial contamination and odour.
