Ballina Shire Council Receives Funding to Launch Circular Clothing Initiative

Ballina Shire Council has secured $34,200 from the NSW Environment Protection Authority to implement a project aimed at reducing textile waste in landfills. The initiative, titled Creating a Circular Clothing, is designed to introduce innovative local solutions for waste and recycling, contributing to the state’s broader goal of transitioning to a circular economy. This project is among 13 selected in the third round of the Local Government Waste Solutions Fund, a program that supports councils and regional waste groups with a share of $2.9 million in funding. The new initiative will focus on minimising waste, conserving valuable resources, and supporting sustainable community practices in Ballina Shire. The NSW EPA has highlighted the urgency of addressing clothing waste, which is recognised as a significant environmental pollutant. The project is expected to provide opportunities for the local community to engage in new waste management and recycling practices, ultimately helping to keep textiles out of landfills and fostering a more sustainable local economy. Looking ahead, the fourth round of the Local Government Waste Solutions Fund is scheduled to open in September 2025. Eligible applicants, including individual councils and regional waste groups in areas subject to the waste levy, can apply for grants of up to $200,000, or up to $400,000 for collaborative projects involving multiple councils. With Greater Sydney’s landfill space projected to be exhausted by 2030, the NSW EPA stresses the importance of collaborative efforts between councils and communities to develop, test, and implement new approaches to waste reduction and resource recovery. Councils like Ballina Shire are seen as key players in advancing the state’s move toward a circular economy.
