Bailou Launches Disco Saree Collection with Contemporary Handloom Design

Bailou has introduced the Disco Saree Collection, a limited-edition range that presents a contemporary approach to handloom sarees. The collection is designed to position handcrafted textiles within modern social and evening settings. It focuses on combining traditional weaving techniques with updated design elements.

Described as “Cocktail Sarees,” the collection incorporates elements of design intended for social settings, combining structured silhouettes with ease of wear. Each saree is produced in limited quantities.

The collection is developed using the Jamdani weaving technique, an extra-weft method where motifs and patterns are created directly within the fabric. The sarees are handwoven by artisans and produced as finished textiles directly from the loom, without additional heavy embellishment.

A key feature of the collection is the integration of golden sequins within the fabric during the weaving process. Instead of being applied as surface decoration, the sequins are enclosed between two layers using a double-cloth weaving technique. This method creates pockets within the fabric that hold the sequins in place. The pocket-sequin weaving approach has received a UNESCO Seal of Excellence for technical innovation and craftsmanship.

Additional techniques include hand-shifting of threads using the artisan’s thumb to create texture, knotting methods for structural detailing, and the use of organza yarn in Jamdani weaving for borders and pallus. These elements create wave-like patterns and a layered visual effect.

The sarees feature deep colour tones such as black, dark grey, and midnight blue. The design combines textured surfaces with fluid silk bases, resulting in lightweight fabrics with varying visual depth. Production is limited to maintain variation across pieces.

The collection is produced in collaboration with Jamdani artisan communities, with the aim of maintaining consistent work and supporting traditional weaving practices. The Disco Saree Collection is available at Bailou Bombay and Byloom, Kolkata, with prices ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹50,000.
