Asia Pacific Rayon Showcases Riau Complex as Integrated Employee Living Model in Indonesia

Purpose-built township combines housing, education, healthcare and community infrastructure to support employees and their families near APR's manufacturing operations.

Asia Pacific Rayon (APR), a member of the RGE group of companies founded by Sukanto Tanoto, has presented the Riau Complex as an integrated residential township designed to support employees and their families while strengthening workforce engagement and long-term operational resilience.

The development brings together housing, education, healthcare, recreation and community facilities within a self-contained environment located near APR's manufacturing operations. According to the company, the integrated approach is intended to improve employee wellbeing, work-life balance and access to essential services.

Located in Pangkalan Kerinci, the Riau Complex has evolved from a riverside village of approximately 200 homes in 1993 into a township with a population of more than 100,000. The area now serves as the location of APR's viscose rayon manufacturing operations and supports employees, contractors and businesses connected to the wider industrial ecosystem in Riau Province.

Situated around two hours from Pekanbaru, the township integrates residential infrastructure with schools, healthcare facilities and lifestyle amenities to support employees living close to their workplace. The company said the community is designed to provide a stable living environment while encouraging social interaction among residents from different cultural backgrounds. Community programmes, including Cultural Week, bring together employees of different nationalities through cultural activities, food and performances.

The Riau Complex also includes accredited educational institutions managed by the Kerinci Citra Kasih Foundation (YKCK), including Mutiara Harapan School (SMH) and an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma school in Riau Province.

Healthcare services are provided through dedicated medical clinics, while sports facilities and the RGE Community Centre (RGECC) support employee wellbeing, recreational activities and community engagement.

Green spaces, recreational areas and community programmes are incorporated throughout the township to support residents of different age groups. The close proximity between residential areas and manufacturing facilities also reduces commuting time and supports work-life balance.

According to APR, integrating residential, educational and recreational infrastructure within a single ecosystem contributes to workforce stability, employee wellbeing and long-term operational development. The company also stated that the project reflects a broader trend of industrial companies investing beyond manufacturing operations to support workforce engagement, talent attraction and regional development.
