AEPC Welcomes Resumption of India–Canada CEPA Talks, Sees Potential Boost for Apparel Exports

The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has welcomed the resumption of discussions on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Canada. AEPC Chairman Dr. A. Sakthivel said the development could strengthen bilateral trade and create opportunities for investment and industry collaboration.
Dr. A. Sakthivel, Chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), welcomed the strengthening of economic engagement between India and Canada, particularly the resumption of negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). He also acknowledged the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mr. Mark Carney and his address at the CEO’s Forum alongside Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, where both leaders reiterated their commitment to expanding bilateral economic cooperation and pursuing a mutually beneficial CEPA.
Commenting on the potential impact of the agreement, Dr. Sakthivel said, “Apparel exports to Canada is 250 million USD. After the signing of CEPA the exports to Canada will double in next three years; besides creating huge opportunities for investment and job creation. The comprehensive trade framework will be an economic anchor for expanding bilateral trade and reinvigorating investment based on economic complementarities.”
He also noted that the partnership could support sustainable energy initiatives and position India as a responsible sourcing destination. Dr. Sakthivel acknowledged the emphasis by both leaders on science-based, inclusive and equitable climate action.
Further highlighting the potential industry impact, Dr. Sakthivel stated, “The stronger ties will also lead to transfer of technologies and R&D partnerships besides AI and automation which will help industry scale its production and improve upon the global compliances.”
According to Dr. Sakthivel, the two leaders also emphasised the importance of skilling and talent mobility in strengthening people-to-people connections between India and Canada, which he said could help both countries utilise their shared potential.
