AEPC marks 48th Foundation Day, reviews export performance and policy support

The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) observed its 48th Foundation Day at its headquarters, Apparel House, in Gurugram. The event highlighted developments in apparel exports and the role of government initiatives in supporting the sector.
AEPC commemorated its 48th Foundation Day on 23rd February 2026 at its headquarters in Gurugram, marking nearly five decades of engagement with India’s apparel export industry.
Addressing the occasion, A. Sakthivel, Chairman, AEPC, said, “The successful completion of 48 years reflects AEPC’s unwavering commitment to meeting the expectations of the apparel industry, particularly exporters. Over the years, the Council has consistently taken up industry concerns with the government and relevant stakeholders to promote, protect, and safeguard the interests of the ready-made garment (RMG) sector.”
Referring to recent developments, Dr. Sakthivel added, “Aligned with the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, sustained efforts have contributed to the signing of several landmark Free Trade Agreements, including the recent India–EU and India–US FTAs, which cover two of our largest markets. Despite global headwinds, geopolitical uncertainties, and ongoing supply chain disruptions, the sector registered a moderate export growth of 1.6% during April–January 2025-26 compared to the corresponding period of the previous financial year.”
He further stated that exports to several major markets recorded growth, including Italy (16%), the UK (4.8%), UAE (10.6%), Saudi Arabia (18.5%), Germany (8.7%), and Spain (7.1%). Performance was also noted in FTA partner countries such as Japan, Iceland, and Australia. He said exports to the US market are expected to double over the next three years following the FTA.
On the occasion, AEPC expressed gratitude to the Government of India, particularly Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister; Giriraj Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Textiles; and Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister of Commerce and Industry, for their support to the apparel sector.
The Council highlighted government programmes expected to support industry growth, including PM MITRA Parks, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, Mega Textile Parks, the Export Promotion Mission, the SAMARTH skilling programme, and export strategies for 40 priority countries through Indian missions abroad. Other measures cited included promotion of extra-long staple cotton cultivation, ease of doing business initiatives, expanded credit guarantee coverage for MSMEs, and national centres of excellence for skilling.
AEPC stated that its export promotion activities during 2026–27 will focus on expanding into new and non-traditional markets. It also reiterated its emphasis on the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices and compliance with global environmental and social standards.
To mark the anniversary, AEPC launched a social media outreach campaign highlighting its activities and government support measures for the apparel industry. Members of the Executive Committee conveyed congratulations to Council employees for their contributions.
