A memorandum of agreement for the branding and traceability of Kasturi Cotton cultivated in India has been signed between the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (Texprocil) and the Cotton Corporation of India.
The task of branding the top-quality cotton farmed in India was given to Texprocil.
Texprocil Chairman Sunil Patwari stated that India was unable to trademark its cotton types, unlike the USA with PIMA Cotton and Egypt with GIZA Cotton, despite having a significant position on the worldwide market.
The Chairman stated that the Ministry of Textiles has placed a heavy burden on business and industry to self-regulate and take charge of branding, tracking, and certification of cotton Kasturi produced in India.
Major Cotton brands like US PIMA and Egyptian Giza have both adopted the industry-led strategy of branding and tracing cotton.
For instance, the Alexandria Cotton Exporters’ Association and the Egyptian Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade both own the trademark Giza Cotton, which is fully maintained by the Cotton Egypt Association.
Similar to this, the Ministry of Textiles will possess the Kasturi brand, which will only be administered by Texprocil on behalf of business and industry.
Additionally, according to Patwari, the work’s three primary pillars are certification, traceability, and brand promotion.
Highlighting the benefits of “KASTURI” Indian Cotton’s specifications-based features will help to increase export opportunities, and full traceability information will be made available to the “end user” through a block chain-based software platform. He added that to confirm “KASTURI” Cotton along the whole supply chain, QR Code-based technology will also be used to give a registration and transaction certificate.
The global acceptability and significance of Indian cotton Kasturi will increase export opportunities, give Indian cotton textile goods a competitive edge, and guarantee increased farmer profits.
