Tamil Nadu state government recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a multi-modal logistics park (MMLP) at an investment of Rs. 1,200 crore in Mappedu village in Tiruvallur district. Covering 158 acres, it is the first such project in the state and will generate jobs for around 10,000, chief minister MK Stalin, in whose presence the MoU was signed, said.

Stalin said the MMLP will be established with public and private participation in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Investment Development Corporation, the National Highways Logistics Management Limited and the Chennai Port Trust, and will considerably reduce freight transportation cost.

Central minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari, central minister for ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and minister of state for road transport and highways V K Singh participated in the event virtually.

“It is the first such park in Tamil Nadu and it will be situated at an important location in close proximity to Sriperumbudur, Pillaipakkam and Oragadam where several industries are existing,” Stalin was quoted as saying by media reports from the state.

It will be close to the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road, the Chennai airport and sea ports and would have facilities, including freight terminal with rail and road links, storage and machinery to handle cargo.

The chief minister said his government is in the process of evolving a state policy on freight transportation.
