According to figures provided by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the value of textile and garment exports from Sri Lanka grew by 28% year on year to $2.5 billion from January to June.
Textile exports climbed 47.8% to $156.6 million, while garment exports increased 30.8 percent to $2.27 billion. According to the study, the two categories accounted for 56.43 percent of total industrial exports from Sri Lanka in the first half of 2021.
Sri Lanka was able to sustain a low level of Covid-19 infections from the beginning of 2021 until the end of May, giving it a competitive advantage over neighbouring textile and garment companies who were dealing with significant Covid-related disasters.
However, the second half of the year is expected to be different. Sri Lanka’s own infections have risen since June, reaching unprecedented highs in August.
