The results of a new Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) comparing the environmental performance of its 100 percent recycled creora® regen spandex to its virgin creora spandex have been revealed by Hyosung, the world’s largest spandex producer.
The study was carried out by a third-party certifier, Networks Y, a Korean LCA consultant, who calculated the carbon footprint – the amount of CO2 released from a product’s full life cycle – of both fibres from pre-manufacturing to manufacture.
According to the study, creora® regen spandex decreases carbon dioxide generation by approximately 67 percent, or almost two-thirds, when compared to creora® spandex in the manufacture of 1 kg.
“We know our creora® regen is unique since we only create 100% recycled content, and our LCA helps quantify why that is important,” stated Mike Simko, Hyosung Global Marketing Director-Textiles.
Creora® regen spandex by Hyosung is GRS, HIGGS MSI, and Oeko-tex certified. The firm is in the process of getting a Cradle-to-Cradle Certified Product Standard material health certificate. Hyosung has created enough fibre to offset the CO2 emissions from driving around the world 1,000 times.
